Mixed media, Mixed feelings by Coraline Aza Bertheau

This work began with a simple habit: keeping things I couldn’t yet explain. My creative process begins with observation, intuitive exploration and collection. I respond to the rhythms of the environments I move through. Places, people, objects, everyday habits and routine situations become the starting point for creating a precious archive. I keep photographs, transport tickets, receipts, handwritten notes, packaging, conversations, screenshots, found objects, maps, grocery lists, and fragments of text. These traces are carefully archived, not only as souvenirs, but as materials that can later be revisited, rearranged, and transformed into artworks. This exhibition brings these collected fragments together to reconstruct the experience of a year lived abroad.

Developed during my European Volunteering experience in Kraków between October 2025 and September 2026, these works emerge from several months of daily life, bringing together fragments gathered across different places and moments. I use this narrative framework to explore my story. Working without a permanent art studio has become an integral part of my process while travelling. The available tools, materials and spaces influence each work, carrying their own stories. My exploration grows alongside workshops, cultural collaborations, exhibition curating, research, archiving, and community engagement in Klub Kultury Przegorzaly. I maintain a state of openness toward painting, collage, photography, video, and editing, allowing each medium to find its place naturally as life unfolds. Here creation is not a „profession”, but a practice deeply embedded in everyday life and social relationships. This exhibition also values the European European Solidarity Corps volunteering opportunity through a sensitive artistic restitution.

Where do the identities of a young adult, emerging artist, volunteer, traveller, tourist, foreigner, immigrant or friends begin? How are these roles shaped by the places we inhabit, the work we do or the people we meet? Documenting the reality of young adulthood remains central to my work. Created at the age of twenty-four, this body of work reflects on movement, aspiration, personal transformation, and the construction of identity within a changing Europe. These pieces were created within a shifting political, social and cultural landscape. The transformations I observed around me echoed those taking place within myself. Overs those months, living abroad became a time of recognizing and accepting changes I could no longer ignore. These experiences quietly shaped the work, becoming part of the process rather than its explicit subject.

I keep just things. I rarely question why? Only later I understand why I chose to keep them to tell my story. Coraline Aza Bertheau website and contact https://coralineazabertheau.net/@aazaaa
